Does speed reading actually work?
Short answer: not the way it is usually sold. You can genuinely learn to get through text faster, but the versions that promise a thousand words a minute with full comprehension do not survive contact with the evidence.
This is an awkward article for us to write. Midsentence is a speed reader — it plays text at 360 to 440 words per minute, which is well above the average adult pace. It would be more convenient to tell you that reading is a skill bottlenecked by lazy eye movement and that we have removed the bottleneck.
That is not what the research shows, so here is the honest version.
The baseline
How fast do people actually read?
The best available answer comes from a 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert, which pooled 190 studies and nearly 18,000 readers. Adults reading English silently average 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction. Most people land between 175 and 320.

This number matters because almost every speed-reading claim is expressed as a multiple of it. Tripling 238 gets you to about 700. Claims of 1,000 to 2,000 words per minute are asking you to believe in a five- to eightfold improvement over a figure that has been stable across a century of measurement.
The evidence
What the research actually found
In 2016 a group of leading reading scientists — Keith Rayner, Elizabeth Schotter, Michael Masson, Mary Potter and Rebecca Treiman — published a review of the field in Psychological Science in the Public Interest. They examined decades of work on how reading functions and whether speed reading delivers.
Their conclusion was blunt: there is little evidence that you can dramatically increase reading speed while keeping comprehension intact. The claims are, in their assessment, overstated and inconsistent with what is known about how language is processed.
There is a trade-off between speed and accuracy. Going faster costs you something, and the cost grows with the speed.
The most interesting finding was about what speed-reading courses actually teach. Graduates often do get through material faster — but not because they learned to absorb text at superhuman rates. When pushed far beyond a natural pace, people shift strategy: they start skimming, picking up headings, topic sentences and keywords, and inferring the rest.
Skimming is a real and useful skill. It is not the same as reading, and it is not what was advertised.
The reason
Why there is a ceiling at all
The intuitive theory behind speed reading is that your eyes are the bottleneck: they wander, they backtrack, they waste time. Fix the eyes and you fix the speed.
The trouble is that the eyes are not the slow part. Understanding language is. You have to identify each word, retrieve its meaning, work out how it attaches to the words around it, and fold the result into a model of the sentence and everything before it. That machinery runs at the pace it runs at, and pushing pixels at it faster does not make it hurry.
This is why the technique with the strongest theoretical case for speed — RSVP, where words appear one at a time in a fixed spot and no eye movement is needed at all — still hits a wall. It genuinely removes the eye movement. The comprehension limit stays exactly where it was, because it was never about the eyes.
Removing eye movement also removes two things that were doing useful work: the preview of the next word at the edge of your vision, and the ability to glance back when a sentence turns out to mean something other than you assumed. Research by Schotter, Tran and Rayner found that taking away those backward glances measurably harms comprehension.
The honest yes
What does work
Some things genuinely make you faster, and none of them are tricks.
- Reading a lot. The most reliable route to reading faster is being a more skilled reader — which comes from practice, a larger vocabulary, and knowing something about the subject already. A specialist reads their own field faster than a novice, and that gap is real comprehension, not skimming.
- Skimming, deliberately. Deciding in advance that a document deserves a survey rather than a reading is a legitimate and valuable judgement. The mistake is confusing it with reading, then being surprised by what you missed.
- Removing interruptions. Much of what feels like slow reading is not reading speed at all. It is stopping, checking a phone, and finding your place again.
- Reading at the top of your own range. Most people can move somewhat faster than their habitual pace without losing much. Somewhat. The gains are real but modest, and they run out.
So why build this
Where that leaves Midsentence
We are not going to claim this site makes you a superhuman reader. It does not, and anyone selling you that is selling you skimming with better branding.
What one-word-at-a-time reading does offer is narrower and, we think, more defensible:
It is hard to be distracted by. The text arrives whether or not you are keeping up, in a single point of focus, with nothing else on screen. For some readers that is the difference between finishing something and abandoning it four paragraphs in.
It suits a phone. A single word at a comfortable size does not care that the screen is small.
It is honest about pace. Every piece here has an authored tempo chosen for its prose, rather than a slider inviting you to push it somewhere the writing will not survive. The fastest book in the library runs at 440 words per minute. That is brisk. It is not 1,000, and we are not going to pretend it could be.
And you can go back. Because the research on regressions is clear, the Reading Room lets you swipe to rewind — winding the words backward until the sentence you missed comes round again.
Reading faster is mostly a matter of reading more. In the meantime, if a fixed point and a chosen tempo help you actually get through the thing in front of you, that is worth something on its own — and it is a smaller, truer claim than the one usually made.
