Moses — raised in Pharaoh's household, on the run for killing a man — is sent back to argue for their release, and the argument runs through ten plagues before Egypt lets go. The escape and the sea crossing are over by chapter fifteen. What follows is the part people forget: forty years of wilderness, a mountain, and a great deal of law, including detailed instructions for building a portable tent of worship that are then repeated almost verbatim when it gets built. The first half moves like a thriller. The second half is inventory.
