The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Huck Finn shoots a pig, bleeds it on his father's cabin floor and bloodies an axe to fake his own murder, then goes down the Mississippi on a raft with Jim, who has run because he is about to be sold to a trader. They miss the turning for free country and drift deeper in instead, through feuds and con men and the argument Huck keeps having with his own conscience. Two things worth knowing first. It is written in dialect from the first line to the last, and the racial slur appears 212 times in the text served here. And at chapter 33 Tom Sawyer arrives and spends the last quarter of the book treating Jim's freedom as a game; plenty of readers have never forgiven it.
