Jim Hawkins takes a chart out of a dead lodger's sea-chest at his mother's inn, the Admiral Benbow, and ships aboard the Hispaniola to dig up what it marks — three red crosses, not an X. The cook, Long John Silver, is one-legged, entirely charming, carries a parrot named after a dead pirate, and is quietly running a mutiny; Jim works this out from inside an apple barrel. Two things worth knowing going in: the sea talk is thick and unglossed, and for three chapters in the middle the narration hands off to Dr. Livesey and then hands back. The stretch at the inn, before the ship sails, is the best of it.
